Hi! My name’s Hannah and I’m the heart and hands behind North River Pottery.
I have loved creating all my life, but ceramics has been my favorite way to create since I started hand building in college. There is something remarkable to me about starting with a pound or two of clay and making it into something beautiful and purposeful. I love the ways it slows me down. Everything about the process makes you move a little slower. From learning to center the clay, to gradually pulling walls up, to waiting for pieces to dry. It forces you to wait for the piece to be ready for the next step. I have to relinquish control. In a world that moves so quickly, the Lord gave me pottery. I pray that you get to experience the same slowness and peace as you sip from one of my mugs or serve from one of my bowls. Each piece is handmade and goes through a multiple step process to transform into the item you see. First the clay is weighed and wedged to prepare for throwing. Then the clay makes its way to the wheel and goes from a lump of mud to a purposeful shape. After the piece is thrown it dries for a about 12 hours and after that the excess clay gets trimmed off. Attachments, such as a handle, are then added and it dries for a few days to get ready to go into the kiln. It gets fired once, taken out, glazed, and fired again. Once it is fired for the second time, the bottom of the piece is sanded smooth and it gets washed. Then the piece is finally ready for its new home.
